Research

With almost 60,000 patients a year, we are always amazed. This amazement gives rise to ideas. We try to find out what patients' needs are and try to develop models that could improve both the diagnosis and treatment of emergency patients.

In addition to conducting its own studies, the Emergency Medicine Research Group is involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of national and international multicenter studies. Our focus is on the research, development and validation of models to improve the triage, diagnosis and treatment of emergency patients.

We employ full-time academic physicians on a 12-month rotation to carry out our studies in the field of emergency medicine. During this period, it is possible to complete a doctorate in clinical emergency medicine at the University of Basel. We also supervise Master's students on the Human Medicine course.

Own research projects

The Emergency Medicine research group conducts numerous studies and is in close contact with partners within the University Hospital Basel and worldwide.

Current research projects:

  • Rational somatic assessment of psychiatric patients on the emergency ward
  • Randomized controlled trial of open label placebo for non-specific pain
  • Effects of frailty-focused care in emergency medicine
  • Decision making in the emergency department - decisions of emergency physicians regarding diagnostics, therapy and disposition
  • Validation study of the international Early Warning Score (iEWS)
  • "Matters Most?" - What is most important to older emergency patients?
  • Diagnostic accuracy of ECG analysis for the detection of hyperkalemia
  • Risk stratification and evaluation of risk factors for mortality in emergency patients

Multicenter studies

A stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial to evaluate the antibiotic prescribing strategy for respiratory diseases

Clinical monitoring vs. anticoagulation in low-risk patients with isolated subsegmental pulmonary embolism: a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, non-inferiority trial
