Diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology
Neuroradiology is a highly specialized, very dynamic branch of radiology that is closely linked to the partner disciplines of neurology, neurosurgery and psychiatry through the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord) and peripheral nerves using the latest imaging methods. Associated organs (eyes, hearing and balance organs, etc.) and surrounding structures on the head, neck, spine and extremities are also part of the spectrum. Psychology, neuroscience, natural sciences, engineering and industry are further partners in research and development.
The main tasks of the department are the provision of cutting-edge medical services and the academic representation of the subject in research and teaching. Our competent team is available around the clock for this purpose.
The main areas of care are inflammatory and degenerative diseases (multiple sclerosis, dementia, etc.), brain tumors, diseases of the vascular system (strokes, hemorrhages, vascular malformations, etc.) and pain treatment.
Since 2019, the neuroradiology department has had a consultation center for patients with aneurysms and vascular malformations, please contact us:

Procedure
Diagnostic neuroradiology
Non-invasive neuroradiological diagnostics are mainly based on computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the detailed assessment of structural and functional changes in the nervous system. For special questions, vascular imaging with catheters (angiography) and fluoroscopy of the spinal canal (myelography) with contrast agents are used, and rarely supplementary conventional X-rays.
Interventional neuroradiology
The focus of neuroradiological therapy is the minimally invasive treatment of cerebral and spinal vascular diseases using microcatheter techniques (extra- and intracranial stenting, embolization with coils, particles or liquid embolates, lysis and revascularization, etc.). The image-guided treatment of pain in spinal nerves, facet joints and sacroiliac joints, vertebro- or kyphoplasties and biopsies complete our range of services.
Neuro-nuclear medicine
Nuclear medicine examinations (scintigraphy, SPECT), including the latest hybrid procedures (PET-CT), which affect the central and peripheral nervous system, are provided jointly with the Department of Nuclear Medicine.
Research and teaching (including workshop on neuroangiography: BLAST)
Clinical and neuroscientific research is carried out using state-of-the-art imaging in close cooperation with the Department of Radiological Physics. The healthy nervous system and disease-related structural and functional changes are examined. Current research activities focus on:
- Imaging brain functions (motor function, speech) and fiber connections for the function-preserving treatment of brain tumors (neuronavigation, radiation)
- Research into inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the central nervous system (multiple sclerosis, dementia, etc.) using new quantitative MR techniques
- Research into functional and structural changes in the motor and somatosensory system in spinal cord lesions (paraplegia)
- new techniques for imaging cerebral vessels and cerebral blood flow in cerebrovascular diseases (stenoses, aneurysms, etc.)
- pain research
The Department of Neuroradiology is responsible for university teaching as part of the human medicine curriculum and trains specialists in medical-technical radiology (MTRAs). Doctors in further training rotate several times in neuroradiology and can combine targeted training with research (fellowship). Specialists can acquire the specialty designations of diagnostic and invasive neuroradiology.
Workshop on neuroangiography (BLAST)
The "Basel Angiographic Seminar and Training" (BLAST) is a series of workshops on neuroangiography organized by us for 20 participants each. They are closely supervised in small groups by experienced neurointerventionalists.
Vacancies
You can find our vacancies here.
The Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology has full authorization for further training for both neuroradiology specialties:
- Diagnostic Neuroradiology (DNR) - Cat. A, 2 years
- Invasive neuroradiology (INR) - Cat. A, 2 years
Residents in advanced radiology training can rotate up to 21 months in neuroradiology (3 months basic, 6 months advanced and 12 months specialization rotation).
Scientific commitment, doctorate and habilitation are specifically promoted, with mentoring. A corresponding research quota (time quota) can be agreed. We would be delighted if you were actively involved in our research group.
