Your stay with us
During your stay in hospital, you will be confronted with a new environment and an unfamiliar daily routine.
To help you find your way around our hospital quickly, we have compiled the most important topics on everyday hospital life for you.
Flowers
Many patients enjoy bringing flowers to the hospital. Please note that potted plants and hydroponics are not permitted in the University Hospital Basel for reasons of hygiene, as they contain microorganisms.
The patient is responsible for the care and disposal of any cut flowers they bring with them. Neither flowers nor potted plants are permitted in the intensive care units. Thank you for your understanding.
Hairdresser
You can have your hair cut, blow-dried and laid directly in your room. Cash payment only. Appointments can also be arranged at short notice by telephone on +41 61 556 53 53.
Electronic Patient Record (EPR)
The EPR has been "in operation" at the USB since 28 June 2022, which means that if you already have an EPR, we would like to ask you to authorize the University Hospital Basel (USB) to access your entire dossier before your stay. You can do this directly in the patient portal of your EPD. If you have any questions, please contact your home institution. We would also like to point out that EPR documents identified as relevant to your treatment will be made available to all staff involved in your treatment during your stay and will become part of your patient file at the USB.
General information on Basel-Stadt can be found on the healthcare website (section of the Department of Health).
You can also find continuously updated information about the EPR and new opening points at our parent company Sanela, which is the technical operator of the EPR in German-speaking Switzerland.
Voluntary service
A team of volunteers provides our patients with visits and personal support during their stay in hospital. This service is free of charge.

Cell phone and WLAN
Cell phone and WLAN USB public
The hospital is equipped with WLAN (USB-Public) throughout.
To connect to this, you need to register your mobile number with our provider Monzoon and accept the GTC and the USB terms of use on the registration page. You will then receive a PIN by SMS, which is valid for 12 months, but must be re-entered every week if you stay longer. The USB Public is then available to you free of charge and without restrictions.

Using the cell phone on the USB
In the interests of mutual consideration, mobile phones should not be used at times and in areas where others could be disturbed by phone calls. In particular, you should switch your cell phone to silent mode at night and refrain from making any phone calls in your room at night.
Radiation from cell phones can cause interference with electronic devices and installations. Cell phones must not be used in places where hospital operations could be disrupted by receiving or making calls. Please observe the relevant signs and the instructions of the hospital staff.
Radio and television
There are radios in all patient rooms. Televisions are also available in all patient rooms. We ask that you only listen to the radio with headphones.
They may only be used with headphones or with the consent of your room partner. In shared rooms, the television must generally be switched off after 10 pm.
Smoking
The University Hospital is a non-smoking hospital. Smoking is prohibited on the entire hospital grounds, except in the designated smoking areas. If you suffer from withdrawal symptoms during your stay, please speak to your attending physician about the advice available from the specialized stop-smoking clinic.
Smokers can also register for a stop-smoking consultation at the Medical Polyclinic after their stay in hospital:

Social counseling
Social, legal or professional problems are often related to an illness, which is why social counseling is an integral part of integral capacity management.
The social counseling staff are trained social workers with several years of professional experience. Like all other hospital employees, they are subject to a duty of confidentiality.
The social counseling service is available in the context of treatment and extends to both outpatients and inpatients, as well as their relatives.
The wide range of counseling services includes in particular the following areas
- Psychosocial counseling
- Social law counseling
- Advice and precautions in the event of a need for protection
- Aftercare organization
Contact us
You are welcome to contact us directly or ask your attending physicians or the nursing team about social counseling.
