Cardiac arrhythmia

Invasive electrophysiology includes the treatment of all forms of cardiac arrhythmia.

The University Heart Center has one of the most modern electrophysiology laboratories in Switzerland. Pacemakers and defibrillators are implanted in two laboratories and arrhythmias are treated using sclerotherapy.

Our offer

  • Catheter ablation of supraventricular arrhythmias, in particular atrial fibrillation, as well as ventricular extrasystoles and endo- and epicardial ventricular tachycardia.
  • Implantation of pacemakers (including wireless and subcutaneous devices), defibrillators (ICD), resynchronization devices (CRT) and event recorders (implantable loop recorders).
  • Extraction of pacemaker and ICD electrodes.
  • Special consultation hours such as the rhythm consultation hour, the extraction consultation hour, syncope clarifications and the cardiogenetic consultation hour.
  • Follow-up of pacemaker, ICD and CRT systems.
  • Electrocardioversions
  • Recording of resting and long-term electrocardiograms (ECG) .
  • Wearable Clinic: interpretation of single-channel ECGs from smartwatches, for example.
  • Surgical ablation (e.g. Cox Maze, atrial appendage closure) and atrial fibrillation therapy as part of heart surgery.

Did you know that...?

more than 800 electrophysiological examinations and ablations are performed annually at the University Heart Center Basel?

Did you know that...?

we can use three different energy sources for atrial fibrillation ablation? Radiofrequency energy, cryoenergy or pulsed field ablation.

Did you know that...?

pacemakers are equipped with a sensor that adjusts the heart rate to the current demand.
