Sub-assistants in hematology

As an undergraduate assistant in the Hematology Department of the University Hospital Basel, you will have the opportunity to get to know the outpatient and inpatient areas of hematology.

The haematology department offers four trainee positions per year, each lasting between one and four months. Students must be studying for a Master's degree when they take up the position. This means that students in Switzerland must be at least in their 9th semester and students in Germany must be in their 11th semester.

Principle

The primary goal is to learn and experience the work of a doctor in a hematology department:

  • Integration of the sub-assistant into the life and work of a ward
  • Integration and active participation of the sub-assistant in patient reports and ward rounds
  • Intensive training in anamnesis, status and assessment of incoming patients
  • Learning how to keep a sensible and efficient medical history
  • Learning to write discharge reports
  • Learning to present a patient (on ward rounds, interdisciplinary conferences, etc.)
  • Learning to care for and present their own patients under the supervision of a senior physician
  • Learning simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (blood sampling, injection techniques, bone marrow, lumbar, pleural and ascites puncture)

The sub-assistant takes part in daily reports and further training events according to the ward's weekly schedule as well as ward rounds. The further course of the day will be discussed with the doctor in charge.

  • Treatment of benign and malignant hematologic diseases (chemotherapy, antibodies, targeted therapies, stem cell transplantation, cellular therapies (CAR-T))
  • Learning about the side effects of chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation
  • Immunological side effects and therapy (graft-versus-host disease)
  • Treatment of infections in immunocompromised patients

Working hours and vacations:

The standard working hours are from 08:00 to 18:00, including a break for lunch and snack. Weekend and public holiday work is not planned. Working hours range from a minimum of 46 to a maximum of 50 hours per week.

The vacation entitlement is 2.08 vacation days per month. For a stay of two months this means 4 vacation days, for three months 6 vacation days and for four months 8.5 vacation days.

Residence permit:

The cross-border commuter or residence permit is applied for by the USB. Please let us know the duration of your stay in good time.

Salary, insurance:

The monthly salary as a sub-assistant is CHF 1,200.00 per month. The statutory social insurance contributions (unemployment insurance, occupational and non-occupational accident insurance) and the costs of the residence permit are deducted from the gross salary.

All employees in Switzerland are obliged to insure themselves against illness at their own expense. You must therefore have adequate insurance cover in the event of illness during your stay in Switzerland and your work at the USB. Clarify in advance that your health insurer will also cover medical expenses incurred in Switzerland. A medical certificate must be submitted from the fourth calendar day onwards. If you are ill during your vacation, a medical certificate must be submitted from the first day of illness.
