Sub-assistants in neurology
Program
The entire spectrum of acute and chronic diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles are diagnosed and treated on our neurological ward. The Neurological Outpatient Clinic is a referral and consultation clinic for general practitioners and specialists in private practice as well as for patients with unclear neurological diseases or with a specific question. As a sub-assistant, you will have the opportunity to experience the specialty comprehensively in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
The working day starts at 08:00 on the ward or stroke unit and ends between 17:00 and 18:00. Night and weekend shifts are not planned. Each sub-assistant is assigned to an assistant doctor. Short rotations to the consultation service, the emergency service or specific neurological functional diagnostics are possible on request.
Tasks and learning objectives
Basic principle
The primary aim is to give the junior assistants a comprehensive insight into medical work in a neurology department. This is achieved through active involvement in the day-to-day work of the ward and stroke unit as well as participation in patient reports, ward rounds, interdisciplinary boards and further training.
Learning objectives
The learning objectives include:
- Intensive training in history taking, neurological examination and assessment of incoming patients
- Learning how to document medical histories in a structured and efficient manner
- Writing ward round entries and discharge reports
- Presenting patients on ward rounds and at interdisciplinary conferences
- Independent care and presentation of patients under the supervision of a senior physician
- Teaching the diagnostic and therapeutic basics of important and common neurological clinical pictures and their differential diagnoses
- Learning the indication and interpretation of neurological functional diagnostics (e.g. cerebral imaging, neurovascular ultrasound, EEG, ENMG, cerebrospinal fluid diagnostics)
- Performing simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (e.g. lumbar punctures under supervision)
- Application of important neurological scoring systems and bedside tests
