Research

Modern ophthalmology requires highly precise, safe and gentle technologies. The Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Basel is actively involved in international research projects aimed at understanding eye diseases and developing new treatments for vision loss.

Main research areas

Research at the Eye Clinic of the University Hospital Basel is divided into two pillars.

Treatment and observational studies, most of which investigate new therapeutic and diagnostic procedures for retinal diseases, are carried out at the clinical study center in collaboration with national and international partners. Both the study participants and all other people affected by the respective clinical picture can benefit from the results of these clinical studies. The clinical study center is regularly certified by the European Vision Clinical Research (EVICR.net) Network, a network of European ophthalmological clinical research groups (see https://www.evicr.net/), which guarantees standardized procedures and thus the implementation of clinical studies at the highest level. Furthermore, we are involved in the clinical studies working group of our specialist society (Swiss Ophthalmological Society - SOG, German Ophthalmological Society - DOG).

The academic working groups at the Eye Clinic form the second pillar, dealing with the development and evaluation of new diagnostic procedures, retinal vascular diseases, rare inherited retinal degenerations (IRDs), ocular tumors and ophthalmopathology. An academic career (doctoral theses and habilitation) is possible via these working groups.

Finally, there are numerous research collaborations between individual groups and institutes in Basel and Switzerland, such as the IOB.
