Coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction
If the coronary arteries are so narrowed that they can no longer supply the heart muscle with sufficient blood and oxygen, this is known as coronary heart disease.
This condition triggers a feeling of constriction or heart pain (angina pectoris). A sudden vascular occlusion leads to a heart attack. Pain can radiate to the arms, back or abdomen, symptoms can include shortness of breath, cold sweats, fainting and life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia or even cardiovascular arrest.
Our offer
- Balloon dilatation (PTCA) and stent implantation:
In coronary angioplasty (coronary dilatation; PTCA: percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty), narrowed coronary arteries are widened without surgery using a balloon catheter. A metal support (stent) is often also implanted.
- Bypass operation:
Bypass surgery is usually an option for multiple or prolonged narrowings. In addition to surgery with or without a heart-lung machine, the Basel Heart Center also offers minimally invasive bypass surgery (MIDCAB).
- Pre-operative consultation (daily, appointment by appointment)
For many patients, an upcoming heart operation represents a major change in their lives. A central component at the beginning of the surgical treatment chain is therefore competent and empathetic information. It serves to establish a relationship of trust between the patient and doctor, as well as to reduce fears and concerns.
