FAQ

What does the everyday life of an apprentice at the USB look like? How long does each apprenticeship last? Which areas will you get to know during your internship? Many people have asked themselves these and other questions before you - here are our answers.

General

EBA? EFZ? Exactly, that means "Federal Vocational Certificate" or "Federal Certificate of Competence".

The EBA apprenticeship is a 2-year basic training course and is primarily intended for those with somewhat weaker schooling. The EBA apprenticeship has replaced the former apprenticeship in many professions. After successfully completing the EBA apprenticeship, you can - depending on your profession and performance - enter directly into the 2nd year of the corresponding EFZ apprenticeship. For example, you can start your career as a health and social care assistant EBA and then complete your basic training with an apprenticeship as a health specialist EFZ. With an EFZ qualification, you can either go straight into working life or complete a vocational baccalaureate and later study at a university of applied sciences.

In principle, it is possible to obtain a vocational baccalaureate alongside any EFZ apprenticeship. However, we recommend that you consult with your vocational training supervisor beforehand.

You can see whether your dream apprenticeship is still available on our job portal by selecting "Apprenticeships" in the job group. If there are no more apprenticeship vacancies for the coming year, you can also apply spontaneously. Click here for the spontaneous application.

It depends ... The requirements vary depending on the apprenticeship. It's best to check the relevant apprenticeship site directly, but you should definitely have a good knowledge of German (minimum requirement: B1/B2 level) and not live too far away. Of course, you will also need a basic school leaving certificate when you start your apprenticeship.

Many people from very different countries work at the USB. We are convinced that our internationality is a great asset. That's why we welcome applicants from abroad. The following conditions apply to you:

  • Live close to the border - you can't commute for hours every day ...
  • Good German language skills (minimum requirement: B1/B2 level) are a prerequisite so that we can all communicate well with each other

It's clear: other countries, other qualifications. Nevertheless, you should have a comparable qualification. Example FaGe: secondary school leaving certificate

At our hospital, all employees communicate with each other in German. That's why a good knowledge of German is important. In concrete terms, this means B1/B2 level.

Your taster internship at the USB lasts three days. This is not very long, but long enough to give you a good insight into your future career. You can find all the information about taster internships here.

Your apprenticeship starts on the first Monday of the 6th week of the Basel-Stadt school summer vacation. You can look forward to a great introductory week so that your start at the USB is not run-of-the-mill. Small spoiler: The highlight of the induction week is the apprentice excursion with all the hospital's apprentices.
