Nursing practice at the USB
Every day, the nursing staff at the University Hospital Basel use their expertise to ensure the highest quality of care, the best treatment and excellent patient care at university level. Experience, theoretical knowledge and research results are combined to create an ideal nursing practice.
Interdisciplinary and interprofessional
Our approximately 2,400 nursing staff, consisting of apprentices, experienced professionals and managers, work together with doctors and other professional groups involved in the treatment process to ensure that patients receive the best possible professional and personal care during their stay at the USB.
To achieve this, we work together in a goal-oriented, interdisciplinary and interprofessional manner. Commitment and experience, specialist knowledge, reflexivity and excellence in teamwork are essential for outstanding nursing practice at the University Hospital Basel. These high standards and the complexity of the treatment cases are both challenging and rewarding for our employees.
"Nursing staff are more important to us than anywhere else. This motivates me to do my best for our patients every day."

Represented at all levels
The strengthening of interprofessional collaboration is also reflected in the new management culture, which is unique in Switzerland: at the USB, management at clinic and department level consists of three managers with equal rights: One person from the nursing area, one from the medical area and one from the business administration area. This new organizational form is based on the fact that the close networking of the three large groups of business administration, medicine and nursing leads to a better result for our patients. This also opens up new scope for action and organization in nursing - and makes our nursing positions even more attractive.
Closely networked with nursing research and teaching
At the USB, we are not only very close to the University of Basel in terms of location: thanks to our close collaboration with the Institute of Nursing Science, the latest research findings flow directly into our nursing work. Conversely, practical problems are quickly incorporated into nursing research and teaching. In this way, we ensure a very high quality of care based on the best available evidence and ensure the further development of knowledge and skills.
What does this mean for you as a nurse? On the one hand, evidence-based professional development takes place directly at the USB thanks to its proximity to university activities: Every ward has a specialist with a Master's degree who brings the latest research input to the ward. And on the other hand, the proximity to the University of Basel and the collaboration with the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) naturally also opens up plenty of opportunities for you to further your academic education.
Many management opportunities in nursing care
As a nurse at the USB, you have a choice when it comes to shaping your career: the wards at the USB are managed by the nursing management together with the specialist responsible for nursing and vocational training - together they form the leadership team. This combination of specialist, management and educational leadership is responsible for the development direction of the ward and has a major influence on its design. This opens up a wide range of career and development opportunities - exciting challenges guaranteed!
Are you just starting out in your career? We also offer junior positions on the wards. Interested nurses are closely supported while they get a taste of different areas, actively contribute their ideas and gain initial experience in order to possibly start a further career path later on.
