Three possible career paths in nursing

The specialist career

As a university hospital with many different specialties, we offer nursing staff a very wide range of opportunities for employment and further development. During your career, you can change wards and specialties, get to know new areas and topics and develop your skills in a low-threshold manner. This guarantees an exciting working environment for many years to come. We are open to your career and further development plans and will support and accompany you in the process.

Interested? Here are three examples of possible specialist specializations and careers:

As a resource nurse, you will deepen your knowledge in a specialist area and apply it to expert tasks on the ward. Possible specialist areas are

  • Oncology
  • Delirium management
  • Decubitus/wounds
  • Palliative care
  • Pain management
  • hygiene
  • Nutrition

They are professionally supported and encouraged by the management team of their own ward (leadership team) as well as by the respective program management.

As a nursing manager, you are part of your ward's leadership team together with the ward manager and the vocational training manager. You will support nursing staff with specialist issues, implement evidence-based interventions, work on the development of practice-related topics and on projects relating to strategic objectives.

As a nursing manager, you have a Master's degree in nursing science or are on your way to obtaining this degree. The USB offers various support options for this career path.

An APN nursing expert is a nursing professional in direct patient care who, through a Master's degree and intensive clinical training in a defined specialist area, implements advanced nursing practice and can introduce new, evidence-based findings. These skills enable the APN to take on increased responsibility and an autonomous role in interprofessional teams.

You can find more information about the DAS APN-plus course at the Institute of Nursing Sciences at the University of Basel.

By the way, we actively support you in (re-)registering as an "APN-CH nursing expert" so that you can officially use this trademarked title. You can find more information at apn-ch.ch/registration.

"The USB gave me excellent support in terms of training and further education. I was able to reduce my workload to 80% during my postgraduate studies. Today, I keep myself up to date thanks to weekly internal training courses."

The management career

If you want to develop further as a nurse in the area of leadership, the positions of team leader, deputy ward manager or ward manager are open to you. As a team leader, you are responsible for managing an entire team, while as a ward manager or deputy ward manager you manage the entire ward (on a deputy basis) and have many opportunities to participate and help shape your department.

In our CAS courses on leadership development, you will acquire career-relevant knowledge on the topic of leadership for these positions.

The educational career

Would you like to pass on your knowledge and experience to the next generation? At the University Hospital Basel, you have the opportunity to qualify as a vocational trainer. This role is often the first step nurses take towards a career at the USB.
