Research and innovation
Research and innovation are a team effort - doctors from different departments often work together on pioneering medical developments. Research groups are active in almost all medical disciplines at the USB.
Become part of our exciting research projects and contribute to medical progress together with us!
Welcome to the life science hotspot!
Are you interested in research? Then you've come to the right place! The University Hospital Basel is part of a life science cluster with three components: industry, university and university hospital. This creates a unique atmosphere and exciting positions for research and innovation. At the heart of major companies in the pharmaceutical, biotech, medtech and nanotech sectors and the University of Basel with its focus on the associated fields of study, our location is ideal for inspiring collaborations in research and development.
University knowledge transfer
In teaching and research, we work closely with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Basel and are in constant contact with the Department of Clinical Research (DKF), the Department of Biomedicine (DBM) and the Department of Biomedical Engineering (DBE).
The transfer of knowledge between the individual faculties and our hospital leads to innovations and improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. The new campus areas being built around the topic of life sciences in and around Basel also underline the innovative spirit that continues to generate inspiring collaborations.
"There are great opportunities for research at the USB and the Faculty of Medicine - I can pursue my interests here at a very high level."

Best conditions for researchers
Our research projects range from basic research to competitive state-of-the-art medical topics. All projects have one thing in common: they are always patient-centered - research at the University Hospital Basel is never an end in itself. That is why we only carry out projects that serve the well-being of our patients - and help us to continuously improve our treatments. At the same time, research at the USB promotes young talent and offers experienced scientists exciting prospects for the further development of their ideas.
We actively support doctors interested in research as part of their career planning - starting with further training as a specialist, where they can choose between a clinical and academic direction or combine the two. We also have various research funds from which project or personal funding can be applied for.
Targeted promotion of innovation potential
Innovation also takes place at a very individual level at our company: On "Future Friday", which takes place several times a year, employees have the opportunity to present their own innovative digital ideas. The condition is that these represent an improvement for our patients and at the same time drive forward processes at the hospital through digital implementation. Future Friday thus helps to get innovative projects off the ground - and rewards the best of them with a paid research sabbatical.
