Sustainability

Sustainability

Sustainability has a firm place in the vision of the USB. We are committed to both ecological and social issues.

As a member of Global Green and Healthy Hospitals, the USB is part of an international network that is committed to reducing its ecological footprint and promoting public and ecological health.

Our environmental topics

Energy

Heating, cooling and electricity: although we cover the majority of these with renewable energy sources, the energy consumption of a hospital is high. We want to reduce this and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and nuclear power.

Waste & Recycling

This is where we address issues such as food waste in order to reduce the ecological impact of food production (including climate change and biodiversity loss).

When it comes to recycling materials such as waste paper, cardboard, PET, used glass, etc., we are guided by the principle of "avoid before reduce before recycle".

Catering

We are improving the environmental impact of food production by reducing animal-based foods and increasing the use of eco-labels in the supply chain.

When it comes to textiles and laundry, it is important for us to manufacture and clean them in a way that conserves resources as much as possible.

Procurement

Where can disposable materials be replaced by reusable items? We are working on constructive solutions that also meet the highest medical requirements.

Infrastructure

It is necessary to improve the overall life cycle assessment of buildings and infrastructure - and not just during the operating phase. This is where we take responsibility as an operator and building owner.

Mobility

We enable and encourage environmentally friendly mobility behavior among our employees, patients and visitors within our sphere of influence.

"Very often, solutions that are good for the environment are also those that benefit health. That's why it makes double sense for a hospital to be sustainable."

Social sustainability

In addition to ecological sustainability, the USB is also committed to social sustainability. Here, too, the aim is to assume responsibility as a forward-looking company and to show commitment by making socially just adjustments in everyday hospital life - both internally and externally in terms of corporate social responsibility.

As with environmental issues, we are also active in the area of social sustainability on various topics:

Training and further education

We train junior staff in a wide range of professional fields and offer employees a variety of further and advanced training and development opportunities. In this way, we contribute to high-quality general healthcare and to research and innovation in the medical field.

Ethics & Compliance

The aim is to ensure correct and fair dealings between employees, but also with patients. Measures to achieve this include a code of conduct, compliance training for all employees and special management training on the topic.

Company health management

We promote the safety and well-being of our employees with occupational health and safety measures and health promotion programs.

Skills shortage

The promotion of equal opportunities, employee participation, occupational health management and the further development of working conditions within "Nursing 2030" contribute to employee satisfaction and thus help to keep staff turnover low and counteract the shortage of specialists at the USB.

Equal opportunities

The management of the USB is committed to equal development opportunities for women and men. The framework conditions for gender-equitable promotion of junior staff are continuously developed and measures to promote gender equality in staff recruitment and development are developed and implemented.

Employee participation and information

We value good internal communication and opportunities for employees to participate. A corporate culture characterized by interprofessional appreciation and cooperation on an equal footing makes a decisive contribution to the satisfaction of all employees.
