Medical device technology. That sounds exciting - and it is! If you're not quite sure what this apprenticeship involves, you've come to the right place. Information on training

As a medical device technologist, you are responsible for the reprocessing of medical devices. Medical devices? These are surgical instruments, apparatus, devices, materials, accessories, etc. that are used in surgical procedures and diagnostic applications.

Your activities:

  • Managing medical devices and organizing the work of the reprocessing process
  • You will clean and disinfect medical devices
  • Assembling and packaging medical devices
  • You sterilize medical devices
  • You ensure quality in compliance with the requirements set out in legislation and technical standards
  • Why your job as a medical device technologist is important: You make a major contribution to infection prevention

While the skills are acquired in professional practice at the University Hospital Basel, the job-specific, theoretical training takes place at one of the vocational schools in Zurich. During your training at the USB, you will be closely supervised by vocational trainers in your day-to-day work and guided to your apprenticeship qualification.

Your training path

1st year of training
You will work, for example, in the Medical Devices Preparation Unit in the East Operating Wing

2nd year of training
You move to the Medical Devices Preparation Unit in the West Operating Wing. You can also do a 3-month external hospital placement in the Medical Devices Preparation Unit.

3rd year of training
In the final year of your apprenticeship, you will return to the Medical Devices Reprocessing Unit in the East Operating Wing. You will deepen your professional skills and be optimally prepared for the final apprenticeship examination.

  • Completion of compulsory schooling, level A (minimum grade in mathematics: 5) or level E
  • You are a team player
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good powers of observation
  • Practical skills - two left hands are out of place here
  • Technical interest and understanding

The vocational baccalaureate complements your basic vocational training with an extended general education. It gives you access to a university of applied sciences FH.
