Information on training
Job description
As a medical practice assistant (MPA), you will work closely with the medical profession. You will see patients and help them prepare for examinations. You will assist with various medical procedures, apply bandages, administer injections, take X-rays and carry out blood, urine and stool tests. You will also organize the course of consultations, answer the telephone and carry out a large part of the administrative work. As a trained MPA, you can work in doctors' surgeries, group practices and hospitals.
Training process
During your training at the USB, you will work in the various outpatient clinics and gain an insight into the laboratory and X-ray departments. In your day-to-day work, you will be closely supervised by vocational trainers and guided to your apprenticeship qualification. You will attend vocational school at the Huber Widemann School and inter-company courses at the ODA Gesundheit beider Basel.
"Home base concept" - this is how your apprenticeship as an MPA works:
1st year of training
You will work in a training department, e.g. the medical outpatient clinic. You will also get to know the training ward and learn professional skills in the first and second semesters (e.g. taking blood pressure). External assignments, such as in the laboratory and X-ray institute, provide even more variety.
2nd year of training
In the second year, you will move to the surgical outpatient clinic and women's outpatient clinic (for 6 months each). Here you will deepen the skills you have already learned in another specialist area and acquire professional skills in the third and fourth semesters. As in the first year of training, you will again have external assignments in laboratory and X-ray institutes.
3rd year of training
Your last year as an apprentice at the USB! You will return to your "home port", i.e. the medical outpatient clinic. External assignments in the laboratory and X-ray institute await you so that you can deepen the professional skills you have learned. Last but not least: the final apprenticeship examination awaits you - which is why you will be really well prepared for it again in the last year of your training.
Prerequisites
- Completion of compulsory schooling, level E (or level A with 10th school year)
- You have a keen interest in scientific and technical contexts
